VCkidsFYI: Prescription Drug Abuse. What you need to know

VCkidsFYI
Ventura County Behavioral Health

Most teenagers who abuse prescription drugs are given them for free by a friend or relative.

How Are Prescription Drugs Abused?

  • Taking someone else’s medication.
  • Taking a drug in a way other than prescribed.
  • Taking a medication to get high.
People think that prescription drugs are safer than illicit drugs. But they can be as addictive, dangerous and risky for teens to misuse and abuse. Youth who misuse prescription medications are also more likely to report use of other drugs.
