In Ventura County

  • 13% of 9th graders

  • 20% of 11th graders

say they've misused Rx painkillers

According to a recent survey, about 1 in 12 high school seniors reported past-year abuse of Vicodin and 1 in 20 reported abusing OxyContin. When asked how these prescription opioids were obtained, more than half of the 12th graders surveyed said they were given the drugs, or they bought them from a friend or relative. (National Institute on Drug Abuse)

How can you keep your home safe? Start with creating a routine for keeping your family medications secure and safe from children.

Start with 2 Simple Tasks

  • Get involved in your community Prescription Drug Take-Back Days.
  • Use the Ventura County’s Prescription Drug Disposal Program. Plan a monthly trip to your local police station and drop off unused medications. Use it as a “teachable moment” to talk about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse. See Disposal Bin Locations
